It's really hard to get one's hands on good electronica - if you're not in the know, you're not in the know. [And I don't mean the pop of nowaday applying a synth beat and vocal distortion.] That's why I was astonished and amazed to see "TIESTO" flash across the screen on Asian MTV.

I can't say much for the video itself [though I love the volume/building light effect at the end], but [info]silencestation and I have not heard anything close to decent trance in forever, so we were suckered by Tiesto feat. Sneaky Sound System's I Will Be Here.

It has a more predominant dance/house feel than trance [since SSS is dance, I'm not surprised, and it is also Tiesto] and I guess is more mainstream [if it qualifies for MTVness], but we do. Anyway, so the long story is: I got my hands on the original and its other remixes, only for [info]silencestation to bemoan that the original sounds different!!! Well, she was right. After a lot of fiddling, the short story is: we prefer the video version.

The world can always use some nice trance! Here we go, a painstakenly re-recorded Tiesto feat Sneaky Sound System - I Will Be Here (Video Mix). Hopefully you'll like it as much as we do.

It's a zip, and I know it's kinda silly, and I wanted to include more electronica but it's hard to do on the fly; especially since most of my electronica collection exists in this FST - oh and this one too.

Might anyone else have some nice electronica to share? Trance is great, but house/drum and bass/trip-hop/anything emotive and hopefully vocal is nice too. We've looped this song for a day now...

Amidst frantic bidding, coding and other miseries, I suddenly spontaneously really wanted to share these songs that I haven't been able to stop listening to, and willingly and happily put on repeat. So here we go: my July hits, rightclick+save to download a zip.

Here's a brief run-down on what's in it:

Against Me! - Thrash Unreal | Punk
Irony of ironies, we first heard a tinny clip of this when we were lazily scrolling down Rock Band's Wii-shop previews, and went 'HAHA! AGAINST ME what a name with an ! too what's THRASH UNREAL maybe they accidentally added a 'h' or something'. [info]silencestation said, "Shall we?" I said, "It's punk, s'okay." But against my instructions she clicked on it and now we're stuck. Haaahahahaha. It's a 2007 punk song that sounds like a 90s alt hit, complete with EPIC! social commentry. Great fun to play, sing and hear.

The Whitlams - Buy Now Pay Later (Charlie No. 2) | indie/alt [quieter]
Another one that has a very specific, and very naggy, social commentry about 'Charlie' who was loosely modelled after his [dead and ex-]bandmate. Chorus is completely literal, but it really haunts me - it makes me want to play the piano for Chrissake, and I haven't felt the urge to even touch a keyboard again since I was 12. Actually, I never wanted to play the piano, so that might tell you how lovely it is. The usual Whitlams' charm, one guy singing plaintively.

Harvey Danger - Defrocked | indie/alt [louder and grittier]
I was spurred to listen to more Harvey Danger again after Rock Band finally got in Cream and Bastards Rise. The only reason why that's not here is because Defrocked is here. A classic that is still brilliant till today.

Metric - Grow Up and Blow Away | twee/dreampop
I also started retroactively listening to Metric because I really liked bits and pieces of their older albums as well as Fantasies; and I am deeply ashamed to admit that the title track of their second-last album totally caught me [and Jun, she keeps thinking I'm looping the same song over and over again...]. There's some beautiful polyphonic layering especially around the chorus.

Spinal Tap - Stonehenge | CLASSIC METAL BABY!
Our favourite metal band is coming out on Rock Band! Sadly only their new hits - I nearly put Saucy Jack here, but nothing beats Stonehenge. I wish it were in Rock Band instead. What can I say, Stonehenge is legendary EPIC. It has druids and everything. And midgets. And is on YouTube.

I guess the theme for this pack is 'songs that have the most unusable lyrics but I really love like nothing'. Hopefully you'll share [some?] of my joy, too!

While I was out on my forced sojourn from the Intarwebz I praised the Lord that I'd gotten my hands on two EPs from my fav'rite bands [hurry up Elbow] – one being Deathcab's most recent Open Door EP and the other being Stars' Sad Robots EP [released 2007 I blame the fact that Stars like never updates I swear I joined their mailing list]. So in accordance to my username let's have a good look at both of them…

Death Cab for Cutie's Open Door EP [indie alternative] )

So in conclusion – we think that the Open Door EP is an extension off Long Division, in both its lyrics, lyrical content and most importantly, musical direction. It is not an EP I adore, but an EP that I am relieved to like some tracks of [3 out of five, not too bad]. I have to admit my flaw in that I really, really want to love Death Cab. Their early music set off so much of my real musical education and I would really loathe to hate them. Their lyrics were so delicate and beautiful that I really don't want to think that Ben Gibbard comes up with drivel now through some bizarre from of regression – and I don't think so, look at Bixby Canyon Bridge versus I Will Possess Your Heart. Bixby is some good shit. Anyway, this deep heart-to-heart conversation and analysis that [info]silencestation and I had about the Open Door EP settled a few things, made us feel a bit better because it serves as a logical explanation, and a connected one, of the music direction that the Open Door EP was taking.

Plus, the cover has that step-ladder to an attic door. A bridging! Insert Fozzie-style Ahaaaaaaaa here. [And also, the cover reminds me of the style that We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes, which is pretty awesome. I meant the cover there, We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes is awesome beyond words.]

Stars' Sad Robot EP [dream pop/electronica] )

I am pimping Stars to you right now. I am telling you that you should preview the Sad Robots EP and if you like what you hear, to just buy the entire thing. For one – it is dirt cheap for the level of skill and beauty there is in it. Each song does not deserve to be priced the same as mp3 paysites make you pay for those ludicrous pop songs. For two – it says five bucks for mp3 download? They goddamn lie. You create that account, you log in, and it'll tell you it's $4 bucks for the entire EP. That's right, they cut down the price when you're actually going to buy it. What is this?!?!?! Please reward Stars for being such fantastic musicians, both in their music and the way they treat consumers, by previewing the Sad Robot EP and buying it if you like it.

Music Samples:
For the Open Door EP I'm going to leave you with what I think is the catchiest track, and is not as annoying as Little Bribes: I Was Once a Loyal Lover.

For the Sad Robots EP here's the free track, Going Going Gone, because it may as well be a new track, and I really want you to buy that EP if you like it. They deserve your four bucks. They deserve it.

Okay so the two separate links are misleading, because you're going to get both of them zipped together anyway. Zipped, because I am getting direly sick of streaming links to our hosted MP3s. Download absolutely OK, streaming so not fucking OK.

So there is my lengthy review of two EPs complete. Now let's see if I ever get down to that review of Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band…

[By the way, [info]tom_kiper, sad robots = ttly remind me of you.]

I'm not one for year-end reviews because anything of note has probably already been posted and it would be silly to foist it onto everyone else again. There is something that I hadn't posted about that I wanted to and didn't get to though: music. Several albums of interest came out this year, so here's a somewhat chronological look-through…

Heretic Pride – The Moutain Goats )

Saturdays = Youth – M83 )

Reality Checkpoint - Logistics )

Narrow Stairs – Death Cab for Cutie )

The Seldom Seen Kid - Elbow )

Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends - Coldplay )

Memory and Humanity – Funeral For a Friend )

Perfect Symmetry – Keane )

Other things I should really check out that released last year are the albums from Story of the Year, The Academy Is…, Bloc Party, Anberlin, Aqualung [higher priority please], The Killers, Coldplay's Viva la Vida EP and possibly Tiesto's new remixes.

And I want to mention SNOW PATROL. I listened to A Hundred Million Suns in HMV and I'm still as bored and disappointed as I was with the previous one, Eyes Open. Final Straw and it's brilliance must have been a goddamn fluke, a fantastic one but nevertheless one. GRAGH. GRAAAGH damn you Snow Patrol!

We are, as always, cautiously looking forward to new albums by bands we kinda care about – last year was pretty good for the count [Elbow and Death Cab were the most important] and so 2009 we'll be watching out for Placebo [shameful! But the previous album, Meds, was really good] and Taking Back Sunday [just to fill our screamo urges]. Fingers crossed!

meme results that naturally no one gives a damn about but I'd like to keep around )
_________________

Life after exams has been a very constructive blur - today was a happier one than most, though what we initially set out for was busted, there were several decisions to be made and numerous other things like finally getting a pair of non-hideous sports sandals on 30% discount after the straps of my last one ripped clear out of the sole on death-anni-day right as I got out of the car. My $17 savings makes me triumphant.

In the meantime, fascinating meme that I gypped off [info]raydance and am obnoxiously posting out of cut because I quite enjoyed her lyrical poetry, even if it was missing a verse, ahaha.

Put your MP3 player on shuffle, and write down the first line of the first twenty songs. Post the poem that results. The first line of the twenty-first is the title.

Love Ridden, I've Looked at You

I'm in Los Angeles today
come around and say you love me
don't know if I love you or if it's all in my head
among the afflictions

hanging around
I'm serious in love
stuff was started
I think you know

two simple places
receiving department, 3 a.m.
your kiss is not just a kiss
it was raining outside

the falling sky grows darker every day
I close my eyes and I smile
all new evening
as I juxtapose

it's amazing
go on just say it
get the rope, tie me to the bedpost
my city's still breathing (but barely it's true)

Uh, I suppose it's about a very emo guy in Los Angeles – who might be into BDSM I guess.

Song Spoiler List if you'd like to guess them… )

Oh and finally I've only ever felt the urge to recaption something on ICanHasCheezburger once, because Monty Python owns Wizard of Oz hands down, even with Pink Floyd playing in the back:

French cats. )

That reminds me: Ed, [info]vacuities that is, I have decided I am dead offended with your "both sides...fancy" remark when I was enjoying talking to you about music and football. I let it slide then but I'll have you know I'm not happy - apply some logic boy, if that statement was true I'll be mighty happy to watch the match instead of dread it, right? Christmas! [[info]silencestation is trying to wean off swearing so I'm employing her substitute instead.] Not the way to talk to someone who watches more football than you, so prepare to receive the extent of my wrath if I make it to the X'Mas shindig.

And that's about all.

M: What the hell? Why is this on MTV Reverb? Isn't this mainstream rock? It ain't f***ing alternative.
D: No, it's not alternative.
M: Is this what they call alternative nowadays? It's insulting my intelligence!
D: I think anything that isn't in the top 40 is alternative to them.
M: It's like those People into Music wot said indie (listeners) people are 'not nice' when they don't even having a freaking 'indie' (music) category in their survey.
D: Maybe they went to indie people, gave them the survey and then the indie people said: "What the f***?! There's no category for indie here!" and they said "You're not nice."

Firstly, I've got to link you to Djinn's little Singaporean drama : Katong Laksa 2009. This little gem came about last night when a cryptic conversation of whether one could be a writer in Singapore cropped up, and on the fly, she created a small passage what sent me into peals of laughter at every sentence [I think "he punched his tray onto the tray rail" was particular genius, and the last line had me falling off the bed in uncontrollable fits] – so if you dislike localised 'literature' and their blatant Orientalist exploitation of their Asian culture like I do, please read it, and make Djinn feel slightly better about me having made her post it in the morning before we've slept on a school day. XD

I'm taking a little time off today to plonk the art I've done but not posted in a while [and quickly post in [info]sangrose10 before three days are over], so here we go. Fair warning that they're in chronological order, and I just found some from uh, last year, so… XD;;;; Fair warning.

Girls, Girls, Girls )

For chronology's sake, one male picture breaks it. Damn you, Nat! )

Okay, back to Girls, Girls, Girls! [One mildly NSFW, undies] )

And that's about it. Now back to the sewing grind, and alternatively dreading D-Day Friday, which in local news, is the coming of my doom arrival of my A'Level results – and I'll probably have to survive through a couple of hours of the school gloating about how fantabulously the statistics did and ignore the students.

Also, $#*@ing somewhat-indie bands! Union of Knives! Statistics! Southland! etc! Why no lyrics?! TAT

PS: Oh, I just thought I should note that my dyed streak is still nicely going strong, though I've grown out about an inch of it.

Straw-grasping, but a genuine plea : does anyone has Ghosts by Dirty Vegas? I'm also up for anything vaguely electronica [working on an FST on a casual basis, wouldn't you know it], so if you're free and feel inclined in any way, could you send 'er over? :] It would be vastly appreciated. I've got Logistics and Mylo and that one Union of Knives song ['Evil Has Never', which [info]pwan_madthingy sent to me] that I adore, so anything else would be greatly welcomed.

Thanks in advance~! ♥

Back from school and awaiting, I suppose, the advent of the (Chinese) New Year. One loses track of time when one has 4 new years to experience in one year, oh Singapore.

A little on my day in school on the eve of the eve of Chinese New Year )

I've recently been binging on alternative music from the 90s, mayhaps my favourite era of music. My compilations of 90s alternatives are full of songs commenting on social erosion without directly saying it, and back then we had classics like Paranoid Android. The new century brought in the age of the whores. D:

On the other hand, I find this a cue to share my phonecam pictures with you. This is the first time I've been able to transfer photos! Yey.

My favourite and latest phonecam photo. That note had been there for a while, and I've no idea what it's been through, what it's for or who it's from. Where was better?

Excerpts from Life, because that's what phonecams are for. )

And just thematically with my LJ :

Djinn sent me this lovely link today - Pandora.com. Think your own personal radio station, with your genre of music, playing both old favourites and introducing new loves without having to tolerate Kelly Clarkson or Evanescence. Brilliant! I've been enjoying it greatly the past few hours or so and picked up quite a few bands that interest me, which is good. You enter base searches like bands or songs and they find other songs with similarities to play for you. For me, I entered Death Cab for Cutie, Elbow, Matchbox 20, Keane and The Postal Service. I'm seriously not paid to do this advertisement, and I seriously think you should try it. This thing pulled out Stars and Better Than Ezra. It really, unfortunately, works.

PS : if you ever want to send me music or suggest anything I should listen to, pick tracks that have 'subtle use of vocal harmony, mild rhythmic syncopation, acoustic rhythm piano, a vocal-centric aesthetic and major key tonality'. Or 'synth rock arranging, electronica influences, a subtle use of vocal harmony and many other similiarities.' :D

PPS : Here's a hint - 90210.

the loveliest music is that which tugs on your heartstrings and makes you want to weep, because sorrow is the most powerful emotion.

So obviously I need a girl body of my own...

Past that, thanks for the well wishes on the exams Phoenix and Nekromance! Tomorrow - scratch that, today - is the day of my economics promos, the first subject I finished studying for in my prep for the promotionals. As if a terrible omen, I was tracking back on my LJ and found an entry from mid-years which went something like (abridged) "Hoshit I've sure studied a lot for econs, I'd better not let myself down" [I think actually the only bit that was really there was the second bit]. Well, in any case, I've done what I can and so all I can do is go with guns blazing and pray I've packed the bullets.

Any large group of exams is really just a huge endeavour for me to smash my way through the notes and readings and past-year papers and pray for the best. On the negative side, the last time I did that it obviously didn't work out but then I should go look at that little keychain which says "Best Progress Class" which I retrieved from my previous school's general office when I went to collect my O-Level certificate. Jumping literally 10 points from my prelim score to my O-Level aggregate was quite a feat, but I'm really simply not very smart at all.

But as I step up to the penalty spot - que sera sera. XD;;

In any case, I'm not sure if I've screwed my first KI papers. I mean, mentioning Death Cab for Cutie's Why You'd Want to Live Here and Art of the Game in my Aethetics essay out of desperation? Hoo.

I found out my optimum study music - I always concentrate best with music in the background, religiously listening to Death Cab for Cutie during lunch and break while doing my work. The other band that is fantastic for me to do constructive study things to is Elbow. I realised soon enough after we bought Cast of Thousands, that Death Cab is basically my premier American indie band, and Elbow is our premier British indie band. From Bury. And since we're hopeless colonial remnants - zomg, I love Elbow. So it is always something subdued, angry/depressed/indie in the background as I toil to the papers. Great joy.

Before I go, another pic that I posted in DoA -

[Oh, another aside note: anyone know where to get actual official English Premiership numbers and letters printed on the back of club kits? I'm definitely going to get the new United kit sometime but I've been agonising about where to get G.Neville printed on the back of it now that the Man U building is kaput.]

Finally getting this meme done - was tagged by [info]lovelycoconuts quite a while back and have probably been thinking too much about this. Nevertheless, standard practice when talking about music - all songs have been uploaded, just right-click the title of the song and save target for the mp3s.

Instructions: List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now. Post these instructions in LJ along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they're listening to.

01. Vangelis - FIFA 2002 World Cup Anthem

Everytime I listen to this - without fail - I feel so emotional I could cry. The fantastic anthem of my first proper World Cup, I've heard it several several times over during the course of FIFA 2002 and it brings such a powerful wave of both sorrow and joy. It also has really good music, and is a good, emotive anthem. FIFA 2002, in terms of media, was far superior to that of 2006. [It seems that Germany's English music is a bit backdated, considering their album had Savage Garden the last time I saw it.] In any case, I can't describe how much this anthem means to me, especially in this World Cup season [which is now over] once more.

02. Kingdom Hearts II [Utada Hikaru] - Sanctuary Lyrics
Angels in flight,
(I need more affection than you know)

I was really struck by it when we first played KHII with Scrunge. Considering I never liked Simple and Clean and it's terrible English version, I was very impressed with Sanctuary and the way it sounds, very emotive and I'm just suckered in by the music. Also, the English version is applicable directly to Riku, it's very touching overall.

03. Keane - A Bad Dream Lyrics
Where will I meet my fate?
Baby I'm a man, I was born to hate.

A Bad Dream captured me as soon as I heard it on the new album. There's something about the rhythm and the seamless, run-on fashion the chorus is sung with lovely backup. I love the lyrics, they're very impactful especially since it's a war song. It's also one of the songs I've adopted as a personal theme song. But there's seriously not much I can say, other than tell you you should really download it for a listen, because it's a fantastic song.

04. The Verve Pipe - Hero Lyrics
erase this disaster even faster than you came to see
a creep from the cradle and a hero driven wanna be

The most dated song for me out of the entire list - a song we discovered when we were still joining MAG - Hero has always been one of my theme songs. Lately I've been having effort/esteem/results-or-lack-thereof issues again in school of course, and I can't help but recall it once more. Love it in all it's semi-pathetic, angry glory which I shamefully identify with.

05. Joseph Arthur - In the Sun Lyrics
I pictured you in the sun wondering what went wrong
And falling down on your knees asking for sympathy

I remember when I first heard In the Sun, and I really really liked it. From the sound to the lyrics, In the Sun really strikes several emotional chords for me and I suppose I've always identified with the Joseph Arthur original version due to the way that even though the song is about someone else, it still sounds somehow selfish. In the Sun is my current song for J.T and Lamps. XD;

06. Nine Days - Absolutely [Story of a Girl] Lyrics
And while she looked so sad in photographs
I absolutely love her when she smiles

One of the most catchy one-hit wonders I've ever heard, often sadly miscredited to Third Eye Blind. XD; Adorable song, so very charming and sweet - and somehow self-reflective. This is my young Becks and Gaz theme at the moment - because he "never seems to run out of things to say". XD From Sangrose July.

07. Beulah - Don't Forget to Breathe Lyrics
A deep breath out on the steps
It's only air that you feel in your chest

It's one of those songs which sound flippant and casual, but of course are really bitter and in denial. I think I'm strangely charmed and awed by it - everything from the subtle, understated music and voice deceptively hiding the bitterness of the lyrics. Also from Sangrose July.

As it is, I'm going insane trying to figure out who hasn't been tagged already, so if you haven't been tagged and you'd like to do this meme, by all means go ahead. :D

Nothing much past this today, except to further spread the gospel of Kingdom Hearts II's Axel's hips, which Don't Lie [You-Tube]. Merrily informed of this video from Jess, I've whiled 2 minutes X infinity of my time watching this video over and over again and it's still worth it. XD All I can say is, if you dig Ansem rapping, Roxas speaking Spanish and Axel as Shakira - you'll love this video. A while while back, Karen [[info]pwan_madthingy] once did a very hardworking meme which was immensely ego-fulfilling for other people and one of the songs that she said reminded her of me is "Until They Cut Me Down" by Iron and Wine - which I'm always very fascinated by whenever Windows Media Player gets to it on my complete playlist, because essentially it's a song about - well, here's the very first verse :

When the men take me to the devil tree
I will be free and shining like before
Papa don’t tell me what I should’ve done
She’s the one who begged me
"Take me home"

- it's oddly rather spot-on when I think about it. XD;;;; What does this say about me --

Anyway, that got me to thinking, that it would be lovely to have a meme about this, one sole meme about this, not just for the ego factor, but also it's just nice to share music. So my very first meme, the ME-X tape. [you know, Mix, Me-x - oh, forget it.]

the ME-X tape
01. Think of (a) song(s) that either:
a. remind(s) you of me
b. expresses how you feel about me
c. or pertains to me in any way

02. Upload the song(s)* and/or link to the lyrics and post a comment.
03. Post this on your own LJ/blog.

*if you don't have webhosting, you can upload the song to http://beta.yousendit.com/

I'll probably make the ones I get into a playlist for myself.

This part is optional - I've also chosen songs that remind me of myself as a bid for me to participate more, feed my own ego and share music. So maybe you'd want to do a ME-X tape for yourself!

*04. Find three songs that reflect yourself.

What reminds me of Mae/Me.
i took the 405 and drilled a stake down into your center / and stated that it's never ever been better than this.
Death Cab for Cutie - 405 [mp3 | lyrics]

erase this disaster even faster than you came to see / a creep from the cradle and a hero driven wanna be.
The Verve Pipe - Hero [mp3 | lyrics]

at times - i do believe i am strong / so someone tell me why / do i feel stupid.
